Tuesday, September 1, 1992 Notes Canseco Continued from A5 was called back by manager Tony La Russa and was told of the trade. "I was kind of close to the on-deck circle and (bench coach) Tommy Reynolds called me over," Canseco said. "I thought he was going to tell me to stay back on the pitch and then he told me Tony wanted to see me. When he told me I was traded I was thinking this isn't April Fool's A6 Star-Tribune, Casper, Wyo. Braves stop Mets streak with 8-6 win NEW YORK (AP) Otis Nixon hit a two-out, two-run double in the 14th inning and the Atlanta Braves stopped the New York Mets' seven-game winning streak, 8-6 Monday night in the first game of a doubleheader.

Reliever Jeff Reardon, acquired by Atlanta on Sunday in a trade with Boston, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th. The NL Roundup Open 1 4 )r i AP Day. Tony hugged me in the runway." Canseco then cleaned out his locker at the Oakland Coliseum and sat in the lockerroom for several minutes in stunned disbe- lief- Canseco attended a news conference in the basement of the Coliseum still dressed in his Oakland uniform. "From their view it makes a lot of sense from a business point of view," Canseco said. "Maybe it's an indication it's time to move on.

Canseco's awesome power helped the A's win the AL pennant in 1988 and a World Series title in 1 989. They A's also won the AL pennant in 1990 but were upset in the Series by Cincinnati. "I'm still in shock," Canseco said. "They (the A's) need a lot of pitching and I guess that's what they were looking for." Canseco has often had some controversial moments with the A's, including this year when he left a game at Oakland in the eighth inning causing the ire of several teammates. His off-field demeanor has also been controversial as he received a number of celebrated speeding tickets and had some public domestic problems with his wife.

The A's, first in the AL West, are taking a chance because Sierra is currently out with the chicken pox. Continued from A5 his friend and occasional doubles partner, a curly haired blond Swiss dubbed Big Bird on the tour, in the semifinals on the clay at Barcelona. Ivanisevic blamed that on the rigors of playing four matches in a row, including a five-setter the day before the semis. But he said the experience there and at Wimbeldon left him believing in his potential. Looming ahead for the No.

5 Ivanisevic in the fourth round might be No. 1 1 Michael Stich, the 1991 Wimbeldon champion who beat Olivier Delaitre 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. In women's matches, defending champion Monica Seles began by crushing Audra Keller 6-1, 6-0 in 45 minutes of baseline bashing and No. 7 Mary Joe Fernandez stumbled before stopping fellow American Donna Faber 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. Continued from AS punter by releasing Joe Prokop and several teams left themselves with just three wide receivers.

Among the older players cut were guard Sean Farrell and wide receiver Stanley Morgan of Denver; running back Johnny Hector and defensive tackle Bill Pickel of the New York Jets; utility man Harry Sydney of San Francisco; running back Albert Bentley of Indianapolis; Seattle safety Nesby Glasbow; and running back Darrin Nelson of Minnesota. The Los Angeles Rams released running back Marcus Dupree, who led the team in rushing during preseason and appeared in his best shape since tie began his comeback in 1990 from knee surgery in 1985. Both starting strong safeties in last year's Super Bowl were cut. Washington released 28-year-old Alvin Walton, its starter for the past six years and leading tackier for four of those, and Buffalo cut Dwight Drane, who replaced the injured Leonard Smith. Smith has since retired.

San Francisco cut half of last year's starting secondary Todd Bowles and Darryl Pollard. Pittsburgh cut offensive lineman Tom Ricketts, its No. 1 pick in 1989, and coach Bill Cowher said he was considering cutting linebacker Huey Richardson, the No. 1 choice in 1991. Vince Evans, the 37-year-old third-string quarterback of the Los Angeles Raiders, was released, then told he would be brought back as he was last year and the year before that.

Other quarterbacks may be back with other teams. "I wasn't shocked, but I know things will work out," said 33-year-old Jeff Kemp, who lost out to David Archer for Philadelphia's third-string quarterback spot. "I've played for and helped four teams now, and I ended last season winning games. So when the need comes, I'm sure someone is going to call." Kemp was joined in the pool of unemployed veteran quarterbacks by Mike Tomczak, released by Green Bay; Anthony Dilweg (Raiders); Erik Wilhelm (Cincinnati); Troy Taylor (Jets), Rick Strom (Pittsburgh); and Jeff Carlson (Giants). Tomczak's release opened a spot for Ty Detmer, the 1990 Heisman Trophy winner, who made the Packers as a long-shot ninth-round draft pick.

Some teams used another new gimmick the "injury settlement," which allows teams to cut injured players by paying them and thus saving roster spots. Jeff Reardon makes his first appearance with Atlanta Winfield blasts three-run HR as Jays rip White Sox AL Roundup Braves went on to win for just the third time in 10 games, and also extended their winning string at Shea Stadium to eight. The Braves had managed only one hit in six innings against Mets' relievers until Lee Guetterman (2-3) took over to start the 14th. Ron Gant, who already had homered, doubled and singled, led off with a double and was safe when Guetterman fielded Sid Bream's grounder and threw late to second. Expos 8, Reds 4 At Cincinnati, Larry Walker drove in five runs with a two-run homer, a two-run single and a double to lead the Montreal Expos past the slumping Cincinnati Reds 8-4.

It was the fifth straight loss for Cincinnati, dropping the Reds six games behind Atlanta in the NL West following the Braves' win in the first game of a doubleheader at New York. The win pulled Montreal to within three games of idle Pittsburth in the NL East. Cubs 2, Dodgers 0 At Chicago, Steve Buechele broke up Tom Candiotti's no-hitter with a two-out single in the seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs then scored two unearned runs to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-0 behind Greg Maddux' five-hitter for their fourth straight victory. Astros 9, Phillies 2 At Houston, Eric Anthony his second grand slam of the season and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Houston Astros to a 9-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. 3RD Morning 9 a.m. -12 noon Evening 7 p.m. p.m. TORONTO (AP) Dave Win-field hit a three-run homer, giving him a club-record 32 RBI in a month, and Todd Stottlemyre threw a five-hitter as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 9-2 Monday night. Winfield, who has driven in 87 runs this season, got his 23rd homer as part of a four-run fourth inning, and surpassed George Bell's mark of 31 RBI, set in May 1987.

Stottlemyre (9-9) gave up two runs, had six strikeouts and a walk for his fifth complete game of the season. Twins 5, Tigers 3 At Detroit, Gene Larkin's two-run double in the 10th inning lifted the Minnesota Twins to a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. After consecutive singles by Greg Gagne and Chuck Knoblauch, Detroit reliever Mike Henneman (1-6) appeared to have struck out Larkin. But Mickey Tet-tleton couldn't handle the foul tip, giving Larkin another chance. He lined the next pitch just inside the rightfield line, driving in the go-ahead runs.

Brewers 4, Yankees 1 At Milwaukee, Ricky Bones held New York to three hits over seven innings as Milwaukee beat the Yankees 4-1. Bones (7-9) had four strikeouts and a walk to win for the first time in six starts since July 18. Doug Henry pitched the ninth for his 25th save. Royals 5, Rangers 2 At Kansas City, Texas finished up the worst August in team history by trading for Oakland slugger Jose Canseco, sending outfielder Ruben Sierra, starter Bobby Witt, closer Jeff Russell and cash to the Athletics. The shocking move came during Kansas City's 5-2 victory, the Rangers' 18th loss in August and just one away from the all-time club record of 19 set in May 1990.

Below is one of his awards for bravery saving lives IT ALU AWARD OF THE DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS TC 439. The following award is announced. STEVENSON, RICHARD SSAN: 544-60-0457 WARRANT OFFICER W1 United States Army 336th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), APO 96296 Awarded: Distinguished Flying Cross Date of Service: 1 December 1969 Theater: Republic of Vietnam Authority: By direction of the President under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 2 July 1926, AR 672-5-1 and USARV Reg 672-1 dated 1 July 1969. Reason: For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Stevenson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a flare ship. His ship was sent to assist in night extraction of a friendly company that was in heavy contact with a largo enemy force.

With conspicuous disregard for his own safety, he flew through a hail of enemy tracer fire to illuminate the pick-up zones for the troop ships. His amazingly accurate placement of the flares allowed the friendly troops to be safely and speedily evacuated. After the extractions were completed, he was again called upon to light an area for a two-ship medevac and resupply mission. Warrant Officer Stevenson's heroic and skillful execution of his mission was directly responsible for the successful evacuation of the troops. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United State Army.
