Question. Do you make an extra charge when there is an autopsy? Answer In spite of the fact that some mortuaries make a charge to the family when there is an autopsy, we do not. In our experience we have never known a physician to request permission for an autopsy unless he was convinced it was necessary. Considerable progress in the medical arts and in law enforcement has come about through the advancement of autopsy knowledge. We feel that if a physician or those charged with the investigation of death regard an autopsy as essential, we should cooperate.

The American College of Pathologists in their official publication said: "The high standards of American medicine are, and will continue to be, dependent to a large degree on the frequency and care with which autopsies are performed. The hospital, the pathologist and the mortician must agree to discharge their responsibilities on the highest professional standards, and to promote mutual trust, confidence and good will."
